  • ¿Eres nueva, verdad?
  • … Sí, digo, hola, sí soy nueva —dijo Diana entrecortada.
  • Ah! ¡Pues yo también fui nueva!, qué coincidencia. Mi nombre es Camila. ¿A qué curso entras?

A ti no te suspenderán.
  • Me llamo Diana.
  • ¡Pues bienvenida, Diana!

Diana felt like a house cat in the jungle, as soon as she had set foot in the new school, she felt the ground vibrate. The very old yellowish lights were almost blinding to her eyes, the windows as small as a notebook were too high on the walls. The building felt like a big gray box.

When she came from exchange, she had to stop by the management office to fill out some papers, before going to his class. When she arrived, she found a girl her age, perhaps a little older, sitting on the floor leaning against the wall next to the door. Avoiding colliding glances, either shy or hasty. She knocked on the door and no one answered, she knocked again and heard a small laugh from the sitting girl. Then she went to consult with the secretary, whose desk was a few meters away.

“You are Diana Valencia, right? The Principal will not be long in coming, please wait with the other student.”

With resignation, Diana got up and listened once more to the secretary.

“Ah! And welcome!”

Although she felt somewhat calmer because her arrival in the classroom had been delayed, her discomfort returned when she realized that she would have to wait with the other girl, because she felt intimidated by how different they were. The girl was brown-haired and Diana was blonde, the girl was dressed in a black shirt and ripped pants, and Diana was dressed in a blue shirt and yellow pants. The girl was relaxed on the floor, and Diana was scared to death.

When she arrived, Diana stood next to where the girl was sitting and was silent trying to keep her mind blank, and then she felt that the girl was looking at her from below, until after a long minute the girl broke silence.

“I’ve never seen you around here before.”

“…”

“You are new, right?

«… Yeah, I mean hi, I’m new,» Diana gasped.

“Ah! Well, I was new too! What a coincidence. My name is Camila. What course are you entering? I suppose in sixth grade, I’m in sixth grade too, I think you’ll like everyone, except Carlos. That bastard! Well, that bastard will surely like you too, he’s a good boy, but he’s a bastard!”

“Well… yes… sixth grade.”

“I knew it, well, then we will be partners. And what are you doing here, is it your first day here? Is it your first day and you’re already late? You should be grateful that Pérez is a good guy, except when he punishes you by cleaning the bathroom mirrors, or when he calls your parents, or when he leaves you without breaks, in fact he is a bastard too. In fact, he’s the bastardiest guy I’ve ever met.”

“Mmm, Pérez?”

“Yes, the Principal. THE Principal Pérez. THE Principal Matías Pérez. THE Principal  Matías «the king of bastards» Pérez. You will like him, he’s a good guy. But he’s a …” She took a deep breath. “A bastard!”

“That mouth, Camila!!!” The secretary yelled from his desk.

“Sorry Patricia!” She answered raising her hand

Although stunned, Diana calmed down quite a bit. That girl, Camila spoke for both of them and for some reason she felt that she was already their friend. At least when she got to the classroom she would no longer feel like a stranger to everyone.

“She is Patricia, Pérez’s secretary.” Camila added. «She’s here all day. I think he lives here. She saved my life once when she discovered me hiding in the bathroom sleeping and said nothing to Pérez. I think that time they did suspend me. But don’t worry. You will not be suspended. Pérez only talks about how important punctuality is and stuff the first time you are late. Pérez is a bore.”

“I, I was not late, they told me that …”

“He’s boring anyway!” She interrupted, «No matter what you’ve done, that guy is a bore. But he’s a good guy. Ah! and he is also…”

“A bastard?”

“Exactly! you know? I think I like you, welcome to this place … I think … I think I forgot your name.”

“My name is Diana.”

“Well, welcome, Diana!”
